RexRomae Gallery, one of our friends, recently organized a pop-up exhibition in Dubai including brand new artworks by Norwegian stencil artist Martin Whatson. The pop-up exhibition was displayed from December 3rd to December 12th, 2020.
Martin Whatson, a key figure in the international street art scene, has created a new series of work called “FREE,” which was presented for the first time in the Middle East. Rom Levy is the curator of the show.
During a period of social and political upheaval, visuals reminiscent of science fiction stories appear on public walls. Martin Watson has spent the last decade putting himself in the shoes of the narrator, creating images full of color and movement that humorously re-appropriate urban features. Images that push viewers, including social outcasts, to present themselves in a different light than the one in which they are generally seen, documenting their interactions with their surroundings in the most colorful way possible.
Whatson, whose unique calligraphic scribbles loaded with cultural references and subversive ideas made him famous, is back with a new series of eye-catching artwork. Works that are socially engaged in nature, with his criticism delivered in a form that intentionally suggests a continual discourse on the decontextualization of the urban realm.
Free is a one-woman show dedicated to the same story. Dedicated to Watson's ten-year career and artistic development. New and old works, fresh new images as well as familiar images with a twist, will be carefully selected and exhibited in Dubai, in complete accordance with the provided setting and current events, in search of inspiration even amidst today's sociopolitical deterioration.
